SO.. 3 years ago I emigrated to spain (from edinburgh).
Finally I've driven home and so am taking the chance to take on of my tanks back with me!

So.. its a tropical 60x30x60cm tank with a fluval 104 external filter..
In a week and a half when i'm home.. 1st thing is get it cycling, really looking forward to having fish again, my office is too stale!

So. I'm needing some reminders...
With an external filter I can "over stock" a little with reguards to the equations cant I? I'm working out at 60cm of adult fish, but surely I can boost it up a little to 70-75?

The last time I set up my tanks. the First was done like a noob without cycling.... oops..
The 2nd was speeded up by borrowing dirty water and used filter media from the first tank and I was up and running with all tests done in around a week or so If I recall correctly...

This time I have bought a bottle of cycle and it states It can get the tank up and running in a matter of days!
Is this entirely true or should I still expect the slowly-slowly process?
Finaly... would the fact that I'm using pre-used filter media speed things up?
The ceramic disks and the first stage foam are used.. but last used 3 years ago! Will the bacteria be totaly dead& gone or will a few still hang around, meaning its just a case of re-produce, making it a speedier process ????

Ta muchly..

Hi

Bacteria in that media is not only dead but fossilized  That bottle of 'cycle' you brought is also just as dead and a waste of money.

Nip up Homebase, get a bottle of ammonia and do yourself a fishless cycle and in about 5-8 weeks you will have done a proper job. Try to get some 'fresh' used media (straight from a cycled filter) to kick things off.

There is an excellent pinned post on here outlining the fishless cycle method.......doing one myself as we speak

haha i thought that would be the case.. just didnt know if things could stay dormant...

also.. overstocking?
