Just out of curiosity, if I return 1 fish to my LFS, would they give me money in return? Might be a silly question and give some of you guys a chuckle, but I don't know how it works.

Best to ask the shop directly, but don't expect a full refund unless they are at fault. Worst case scenario is you get nothing, best case is probably 10-30% of retail value.

*of store credit, not cash.

Pretty much as JenJ says, firstly.. check they even take fish back... secondly... they are doing it as a favour to you.. don't necessarily expect much/anything for it... many places don't take back livebearers (imagine how prolifically they must breed in their tanks!)

If its a return because they sold it to you and it killed everything... or its sick within whatever guarantee time they have then that's something else...

I've had the fish for 6 weeks now. Like I said, I asked them for 3 females. I thought I had females till I read on here how to identify between sexes.

In that case you probably could - or maybe ask to swap your male for a new female?

Sometimes it is very hard to identify the sex of fish in a shop as they are usually young, especially if one of the main differences is size!

If one pet store will not take the fish another one will.  PetCo does a fish adoption thing.  They don't promote it much. But if you have a fish you can't keep for whatever reason they will take it for you but don't expect any money for it.

More petstores will take back a healthy fish you might get store credit but most of the time you will not get any money. Sorry.  you could tray and place the fish in a new home your self.
