Earlier today I stopped by a new restaurant to check out the menu. When looking around I noticed they had a couple fish tanks with piranhas in not so nice environments. The "larger" tank looked to be a 29 US gallon with 2 black piranhas that were 10". The second tank was a ~3 gallon hex sitting next to the cash register with one 3" piranha. The small tank had half eaten goldfish feeders sticking to the filter intake and the larger tank was glittering with with fish scales. Not the thing someone eating food would want to see.

Now I have to say, I'm all for people keeping exotic fish when they are cared for properly, but this hit me in such a bad way I turned around and left. I'll probably go back and bring to their attention things they should change, but something tells me whoever "cares" for these fish (as well as the manager) will not change their mind and wouldn't care. In any case, this is a restaurant that I will never eat at.

What would you do?

Id order deep fried Piranha!!!

I didn't find that funny,

Go up to the manager and kindly explain what they are doing wrong, if he listens and doesn't think you are knig neptunes loyal assistant, volunteer to help out and try to sort it out.

J4MES

There nothing funny about an animal suffering.
Them tanks are way to small.
Do petition outside the shop, they might take notice then.

i found it amusing.

anyway, yeah tell the manager politly how bad it looks, how much it put put you off and make him realise that it would be loosing him custom.
Suggest getting bigger aquariums or suggest, cool atlernative fish that would be happy in aquariums that big.

the place is a buisness so money is important, tell him how much more buisness he will get with nicer aquariums, how much the 10" guys are worth and that he could make some good money selling them too someone with a more sutable tank ect

Kudos to you for saying something! I would have definitely said something also.

That's cruel for them to be in a tank like that.

I surely don't find it funny to those of you who find it amusing. Whenever there is a video or picture of any other fish this place goes nuts at the horror of it all but it's amusing when it's piranhas.

About the money from selling them, seeing as there are 2 of them and in such tight confines, leads me to believe they are Pygo's and definitely not Serra's, and most likely redbelly piranhas since they are the most popular, you won't get anything from them if you sell them. 10" redbelly's are not a big deal.

I don't think they are redbellys since they are all black unless that's the color redbellys turn when they get larger. :dunno:

I'll take your suggestions and go back tomorrow.

They may not be, I was just guessing. Redbelly piranha start to turn black when they get 6-7".

Do they look like this?

I'm glad you're doing this. I have a lot of respect for you. Keep us updated if you can. :)

That's hillarious!

The situation with the fish however, is not.

I would definitely speak to the owner/manager before doing anything. There's a pretty good chance he/she is unaware and if approached politely, may correct things.

just try not to scream at the owner and he might understand more hell if u have the tank spoace offer to buy them off him and restock it properly for him :good:

They usuaaly ut them only decoration, i guess they dont like to keep the fish. Or they put it to make customer come to the restaurant.

What would you do?

Tactfully suggest the fish aren't in a big enough tank, and that the one near the cash register might turn people off if they see half-eaten goldfish. What else can you do? Nothing.

The place sounds Chinese, and if you've ever been to China, you'll understand why they do the things they do. Old habits die hard. With that said, you might try their General Tso's chicken. That recipe seems to vary greatly among different Chinese joints; maybe this one has a really great sauce! Also, try their Mongolian beef. If prepared properly, the beef should be tender enough to easily cut with a fork while still remaining crispy. The deep fried Piranha, if offered, would go well with a good soy-based sweet dipping sauce.

Regards.
