Replacing Live Sand.

I have had my current tank running for about 8 months now.

I have read somewhere that you need to replace part of the live sand from time to time.

Is this right and if so how much and how often do people do it?

I just put new sand in when mine gets a bit low. Whic reminds me, I need to do it
