I am planning to replace a small internal Aquael filter soon with a bigger filter.
I was planning on running the new filter with the old one for a while and also using some of the foam sponge to seed a new external filter for a new tank.
A new foam sponge is going to cost around £5, about a third of the price for a new filter unit!

Can this filter foam be purchased anywhere cheaply and cut to fit into the filter?

Pot/Pan scrubbers (without soap in) do exactly the same job at a fraction of the price. You can get it in big sheets from wilkinsons in uk. Just cut it to fit.

I use sponge material in lots of filters if that is your question. Replacement sponges are made for at least the Rena externals and the AC hang on back type filters. The sponge material itself is quite cheap, far less than the £5 if I can believe the exchange rates. You can also buy sponge filter material in bulk but for the small amount you want it would end up costing far more to buy that way.

If you havn't already Barry have a look on ebay.

Found same stuff at LFS for pond filters but bigger.
Prices were comparable to ebay.
Gonna buy a big block and start chopping!

:good:
