Hi

I've just plumbed in my new external filter, which is currently running along side the old internal canister which is mature.

How long should I leave it before retiring the old internal filter. Is there any was to speed up the process?

Thanks

Rob

I'd say leave it about a week.

and sadly there isn't a way to speed it up unless u can get the media out the internal into the external.

Yeah i agree with James, try and get the media out of the internal and put that into the external, the bacteria will then seed your new filter much quicker.
will also save electricity by not running both.

I'd personally leave it 4 weeks. This way, your gonna have no problems and you'll know for sure your filter is ready.

The only other way would be to put all of the media (if it will fit), from the old filter into the new filter then you can retire the old internal right away.

Okay thanks.

I've popped open the internal, and noticed there was a piece of filter in there I used to prime it from another tank. So I've placed that in the new filter just to move some bacteria around.

I'll sit tight now and let it develop for a week or so.
