I need to get a new tube for my Malawi tank. This may be a daft question but what is the difference between a tube for aquariums and one for a general light fitting - apart from price that is? An aquarium tube is £10+ but my local TLC electrical store seems to sell just what I want for £1.65. Is it a marketting scam or is it really different? I don't have plants - all I want is a white light.

IF you just want white light like normal tubes then TLC is best.
Aquarium tubes have special light output to suit tropical fish so there a diffrent light spectrum.

A light from any source will work about the same. Some special aquarium lights are made to enhance certain fish colors but those are generally not very good lights for plants so you are doing a trade off anyway. Buy whatever suits you and it will work fine. .
