I have a used rena xp3 and it makes some noise. I've taken out the impeller and cleaned it -- there wasn't any gunk anyways. It's still making noise though, any suggestions on what else I can check/do to make it quieter?
When I lean in it sounds like it's coming from the motor area (the top of the filter). Thanks! ;)
Andd the instructions say it has to be 24" below the tank. First, is this 24" from the bottom of tank or the top? If it's from the bottom I'm not able to do anything about it because my stand is a shortie. :(

Oh, and does anyone know where I can buy more tubing for it? The guy I bought it from butchered the tubes and they're super short... makes it really hard to get at the filter.

the noise is probably trapped air. if you tilt is sideways it should help clear it. if it continues then check all of the joints in the pipework etc just to see if any air is getting sucked in. the pipework can be purchased from most lfs it doesnt have to be rena pipe :good:

The tubes should be as short as practical for the location of the filter. I once set one up with the hoses a bit longer than Rena suggested and the darned thing had the hoses pinched and it would not move water. I had to move the filter farther from the tank to get the kinks out of the hoses.
The critical dimension is measured from the water level to the top of the filter. I think you will find that needs to be between 2 and 5 feet. If you are near the 2 ft end of things, your noise may be the result of cavitation at the impeller, not air at all. In that case, you could try throttling the return flow a little at the spray bar and see if the noise disappears.

Unfortunately it is less than 2ft. I can't throttle the control valve because I don't have one. Since it is used, it came with bio wheels that I found to be really obnoxious (the waterfall noise). So I made a spray bar instead.

I will try to tilt it as much as I can, but it's pretty difficult because the hoses are so short it makes it impossible to move around.

Take one of the hoses off and run to a home improvement store and find another clear hose with same dimensions. Make sure its safe for drinking water.
