-->My rena xp3 filter lines are quite "dirty". I assume it is algae or perhaps mold? Should I clean them? How often? and how? These could seem like "silly" questions but I want experenced help...

I have a rena xp3 filter in my 55g. I, obviously, have lots of current in the tank. Anyway, the tank is quite new (one month). I have had some algae growth but I have been able to control it by cleaning the glass , plants and wood with a scrub brush (and my fingers) and then syphoning off the alge aswell as letting the filter take care of it. I have apparently avoided the ususal cycling of a new tank by using a power filter that was 3-4 weeks used in another mature tank(a aquaclear 30). (aside: why dont stores sell used filter media to help avoid cycling??) I have had undetectable amounts of ammonia and nitrite since day one. I added 11 rummy nose before I found out how sensitive they are to new tank syndrome, but luckily I have had good water conditions. I have now added 4 lake Inle rasboras, 3 corries , and a clown pleco. My nitrate was about 10 ppm(mg/L) before 20% water changes once each week.

I should add that the rena xp3 is brand new....

i've had a rena XP2 for over 5 years and have never cleaned the tubes. as long as the water's flowing properly i wouldn't worry about it.
