RENA XP2/XP3 or EHEIM 2215/2217 - So , what would you go for and why?

I have a rio 180, which i dont think is quite fully stocked but it will be :fun: I want nice particle free clear and clean water, as we all do! I dont want a noisy filter either!

eheim 2215 . why? because its an eheim . the eheim classics are great filters , good flow and a proven track record of reliability . a mate of mine has had 2 of these running for over 20 years and neither has missed a beat .

and as minxy said in another post , the new fancy eheims ( pro2 pro3) arepushing the price of the classic range down , which is great because if you want a good solid no frills filter , imo there is nothing better

Have you ruled out an APS 2000EF for £75 and a Fluval FX5 for £137 (both new on ebay, I have just ordered latter for my 540l)?

Too much to spend right now tbh. I'll be buying second hand. Currently i have the internal juwel filter and a fluval 3+ running. i also have an aqua one cf700 external spare. dont know what thats like though, got it with the tank.

To me, choices between Renas and Eheims are vary hard. I tend to like what I hear and experience about both of them better than Fluval and Tetratec, if only slightly.

If if were in a non-sleeping area I would choose Rena XP2/XP3, whereas if it were in a bedroom etc. I would choose an Eheim 2026/2028. If it were a separate fish building I might choose an FX5. The 2215/17s are probably fine alternatives to the 2026/28 even if a little less convenient.

Just my 2 cents, WD

yes the eheims are pretty much silent . i have a 2217 and a 2028 running on my tank and even when i open the doors and get down in front of the filters , not a peep . and they give 1st class filtrstion

whats your budget? eheim 2215 plus on warehouse aquatics new is £65.99 with free delivery

I have plenty pf XP2 and XP1 filters because I find that I cannot hear them, even in the dead of night, unless I am within a foot or two of the canister. I have no experience with the Eheim brand because they are far more expensive than my Renas and the Renas are plenty good enough for any reasonable person. I alos have a Rena XP3 tat is dead quiet on my larger tank but, IMO it is too big for a 45 gallon tan. Even the XP2 is bigger than is needed on a tank that size but I suspect an XP1 would not do the particle cleaning you are looking for.
