Later on this week my Bala's and Kissing Gourami will be going to a new home. my mom has a (dont quote me) but i think a 55 or 65 gallon bowfront that has only 1 fish in it right now she's willing to take on the balas and gourami's for awhile anyway until we need to move them again. so soon my 29G will be down to just my pair of blue gourami, my 2 tiger barbs, my 2 corydoras, and 3 bamboo shrimp.

--The Cory Cats i have are spotted and have orange fin's, it was suggested to me to up my numbers, do they have to be the same kind or can we add diff kinds??

-- we will also be adding about 5 more tiger barbs to make the number 7

-- it was also suggested that i move my 6 mollies and platys from my daughters little 5G to our 29G is this still an option?

and last but not least. as i was skimming the fourms this morning i was reading alot bout tank levels and it's pretty unanimous (?) that everyone suggests using liquid testing.. where can i get this?? as ive always just used the cheap strips.

as far is know the corys can be homed with anyother cory species but i may be wrong. id up the barb numbers too im not sure about the mollies and platys never kept them myself. i bought mine from maidenhead aquatics but thats here in the uk lol. i never use the cheap strips as they are no where near as aquarate as the liquid testing kit why not try ebay?

You should up these to at least 6 in order to make a proper school. Yes you can keep different groups of cory together, BUT adding two corys of three different species doesn't make a school of 6, they need to be of the same kind. Does that make sense?

5 gallons is FAR too small for all those platys and mollies, these fish are too active for that size tank, they should be housed in a larger tank.

The tiger barbs may nip at the corys, keep an eye out.

Yeah I'd get rid of the tiger barbs and maybe replace them with something a bit less aggressive. You don't really have the room for the 12+ needed to keep the squabbling at a minimum, with 7 you run the risk of them turning on the other fish too.

there are lots of hiding spots for the corydoryas, and would i really have to worry about the tiger barbs turning on the other fish?? right now my tank consists of a pair of blues, 2 kissing fish, 2 balas, 2 barbs and 3 bamboo shrimp. i had it suggested to me to ditch the balas and the kissing gouramia as they will get to big for my tank and keep the blues and up the numbers of corys an barbs. so really the only fish left in my tank after those 4 leave will be the 2 barbs (that we want to up to 7) the 2 corys (that we want to up to 6) my 3 bamboo shrimp and the pair of blues.

and smokeyjo : ty i'll check out ebay. cuz all my LFS's sell are the test strips.

Tiger Barbs really need to be in groups of 10 or more to not bother tank mates, but most of the time they still will, Cories don't spend all day hiding so it doesn't matter about the hiding spots.

Add the corys first, get the corys settled in and then add more tigers! If you add cories to the tigers, the tigers get excited by something new and nip it... if you have cories first for atleast 2 weeks, they will be settled and confident and the tigers wont be, they wont nip unless you get some serious hardnut tigers.

Woulod get 2-4 more cories of same species at least... Sterbai cories are gorgeous and you never know, with a good group of them, they might even breed for you! Babies corys and eggs are great fun!

XD TY! I sure will up the numbers of my corys first. which i probably would have ended up having to do anyway, because our tigers are what im guessing as full grown and all i can find are baby tiger barbs, im nervous about adding such little ones to the two we already have!

I agree. Tiger Barbs are awesome fish but they are extremely nippy, especially in small numbers.

ok last 2 questions them im done! XD

can the 3 platys and 3 mollies we have in our to small 5 gallon be moved into our 29G after we move the balas and kissing gourami??

and we are fairly sure both our 3 spot gourami are males, my husbands been reading fourms like crazy to try n sex them and he said he's pretty sure they are both male. so should we remove 1 male and try and get a female 3 spot... can blue 3 spot gourami breed with any other type of gourami?? i think my mom has a female gold gourami?? she is yellow and striped kinda like a blue 3 spot.

I can tell you from experience, than even 10 + barbs doesnt make a difference. You need 20+ really, and the space to house them (hence im upping the Gold Tigers to 12 this weekend) I would never put my Corys in with them, i doubt they would last 5 mins in the main tank.

Even with my 18, they still fight, and the tank is barely stocked. (See signature)

A 29 gallon tank is waaaay too small for 2 male Three Spot Gouramis to co exist. You should trade your mom for her female Gold Gourami, which is the exact same species as your Blue, but just a different color variation. Yes, Blues & Golds can breed together.

Also, I know it's not what you wanted to hear, but Tiger Barbs aren't good for your setup & the other fish. They grow very large for a schooling fish and usually do best in a Tiger Barb only tank.
