In light of what I’m going through right now I thought this might be good to be included somewhere in the beginners section. If it is already somewhere and I missed it sorry for a double thread. If it’s not maybe it can be added to one of the pinned topics. I changed apartments in my building last spring to a much larger apartment. I upgraded to 30g tanks last June/July. This winter I’m having massive temp fluctuations in my new apt. I have a heater that is supposed to be for 20g-30g tanks. Well this thermometer which works fine on my 20g is not cutting it for my 30g. My tank temp has been going up and down as much as 5 degrees! And I believe it is wreaking havoc in one of my 30g. My other tanks that have had a stable temp have been problem free all winter. My point? Don’t skimp on a more expensive heater. It’s worth the extra cash.

i think you mean heaters, not thermometers ;) and you must get the correct wattage for the size of tank

You can get similar problems with heaters that are too powerful. Bit of a pain when you have a tank which is on the threshold size wise. Your experience suggests using the more poweful heater (eg 30-40 not 20-30) but mine suggests otherwise.

Why must things be so difficult? :/

I picked up one today that is for 40g and it has degree numbers on it (72,74,76F ect). So I’m hoping I can just put it on 78-80F and it will stay there.
