Hi,
I am currently starting a 180 litre fish only with live rock, I now have a prism protein skimmer which a friend gave me. However I beleive it is designed for a 150 litre tank. I am thinking of getting a hang on the back refugium primarily as a refuge to breed copepods etc. I have been researching online and it would seem that most people have either a protein skimmer or a refuguim, so my question is can i have both and is there any draw backs?

I would think that most people actually have both. Usually when you have a sump with a refugium section, you will also have a protein skimmer in the sump. No drawbacks other than more equipment to look at and the benefits of having both outweigh that tremendously IMO.

One thing I would do is buy a different skimmer. If it is the Red Sea one they are pure s**t.
