Hi...I'm not sure if this will work, but, I decided to see if there was a way to avoid all this retrofit stuff. I have a 24G Nano Cube DX with LEDs. Unfortunately, I would have liked to have added more light to my hood, but, as a professional, I don't have that much time to tinker. I called Chris at Nanocustoms and he is not doing any more mods on my type of cube. Well...I wanted a refugium, so, for the time being I'm staying with the stock setup.

Last year, I set up some lighting for an outdoor water feature that I have in my backyard. The lights are submersible and have 10 watts of quartz halogen light. From what I could research, the light gives off light in the 3000K range. The light is OK if not submerged, but, 20watts or higher it should be under water. I pulled one of the lights out from the feature and wouldn't you know it: it fits perfectly between the two fans in the back of the hood right over the middle chamber where the refugium is usually placed.

Right now, my tank is undergoing it's 'dry run'. With stock lighting, a swapped out Maxijet 1200 filter and 100 watt Ebo Jager heater, the temp settled in at 78.9 degrees. I cut the heater back a bit to ensure no added heater component above the desirable setpoint (78 degrees). I placed the light and now I'm running with the stock lights on and the 'fuge light' to check for temps. So, the jury is still out on this. If the heat is in satisfactory range, then one would still have to see if macroalgae would survive.I'll post my results. SH Here are the pix:

Can you explain to me what a refugium is and what it does and why you mounted the light...I may get a 24G nano as well ( in the future ) so I thouight what better time to learn..

HI Grey...a refugium is a separate area (refuge) from the regular SW aquarium. It provides a place to put some livestock or macroalgae that provide help to your aquarium without necessarily exposing it to the main tank. Eg...macroalgae is a type of algae/plant that extracts nitrates and phosphates from the SW.....in other words detoxifies it. However, most if not all can take over the tank and live rock if not 'pruned' or pulled out. Therefore, in a refugium, it is in contact with the tank water but not the main aquarium.

The cube has 3 chambers in the back with dividing walls, effectively a good setup to make one a refugium. If you put macroalgae in the back, it needs light and there is no light fixture over this area. Hence, an attempt at a mod (modification) to get light back there. Hope this helps. SH

Hi....there was no increase in tank temperature so this is a GO for me. The jury is still out on whether the future macroalgae will thrive under 10 watts of halogen light. So....will repost when this is clear. SH

it should work as i have two 50 watts in my tank and it has given enough light to boost my two fluros and allow great plant growth in f/w

Hi...I decided to drop the submersible light into the chamber. So far, amazingly, the hood lights and the submerged halogen light have been on for 7 hours and the temp hasnt' exceeded 77 degrees. I'm going to leave the lights on overnight to be sure. This is going better than I thought. Whereas I was going to fix the light between the two fans, I know think that I will take the supplied housing and fix it to the wall between chambers 2 and 3 and keep it underwater. This will alleviate any heat on the hood and bring the light closer to the macro when ready. SH

Hi...after running 12 hours submerged with the hood lights on the water temp this morning was only 76.9 degrees. I think the light is better off submerged for heat purposes. That's it....time to empty the FW and ready for SW LR/LS. SH

Hi..sure....here is a pic of the submersible over the middle chamber....halimeda is underneath...not the greatest pic..but..good enough to show the setup. My macro is still alive and green after one week. SH
