That is a hang on version of a refugium. A refugium is a predator free area where a species can grow and multiple. Most people use macroalgae in their refugium where it is free from the jaws of herbivorous fish and invertabrates it can also house coral, copepods etc. I personally think that a sump with refugium is a better option. They can be bigger more space to keep whatever, easier to plumb into the aquarium and allow for lighting to be concealed. Generally the refugium if it contains macroalgae will have its own light source which most people say should be on 24/7 or at least inverse to the main aquarium lighting. Have a look at refugium integrated into sumps as an option.

Hope this helps

Thanks that does help!

I don't think I can have a sump refuigium becuase my cabnet will not allow it

The hang-on units can definitely work well. Pairing a good light with one will really help your chances for success :)

Ok, no probs, hopefully someone will who lives in the UK.
maybe you can answer this: can the light just be a standard clamp on desk light?

I too am interested in adding one of these hang on units. Could you please tell me what I would put into it, caulerpa and what else? I read about some type of mud?

Would the light required need to be of the correct spectrum? Or could it be any light, for example a desk lamp with normal everyday bulb in it?

Erm yep I think thats what happens, I asked him this and he replied:

Dear bronwee,

The unit hangs on the back or side of your tank the small powerhead goes inside your tank and pumps in the refugium which then overflows back into your tank it has 1.5 gallons in it. We can provide instructions but no-one ever asks for instructions as it is that simple. We have sold many to people with juwel tanks and it seems no-one has had problems attaching them. The complete system may explain how it works in more detail.

So I think this sort of answers your question.

You CAN use clampon desklights, the challenge there is finding a bulb wiht the right color spectrum. most household bulbs are in the ~3000K range for color temp which is not ideal for growing plants. You want more like 6500K
