i am looking to get into marine fish keeping and have had many tropical tanks

i am looking on the internet and have come across reef or regular fish aquariums but what is the difference

please help

There are mainly three types of salt tanks:
1. Reef tank
This has fish, live rock and corals
2. FOWLR AKA Fish only with live rock
Name is self explanatory, fish with live rock, NO coral
3. Fish Only (aka FO)
Only fish

Why one over the other? Well, it depends. If you want coral, the choice is clear. There are, however, many fish that eat coral and/or other invertebrates that you would not want in a reef tank, so for these people generally have a FOWLR tank.
Some people do no live rock and have a FO tank mostly to keep the cost down, but most everyone agrees that having live rock is the best for any best and makes for a healthy environment.

Hope this helps!

FOWLR: Fish Only With Live Rock, is a tank that just has fish and Live Rock. Some also have a CUC (Clean Up Crew).

Reef: Is a tank that has everything, fish, live rock, cuc and corals.
