Hello,

I have 3 3" redtail tinfoil barbs in my 400L tank with 1 4" Oscar and a 4" BGKF,
Two of the Barbs are almost constantly 'slapping' each each other so to speak.

Is this normal behaviour for them, or is it worth getting a couple more?
They dont seem to hurt each other, but dont seem to be shoaling so much anymore either
because of the battling going on?!

Any comments appreciated on the subject :)

Sam.

Hello,
I have 2 tinfoil and 2 goldfoil barb at about 7" each and these regulary swim along side each other, almost pushing into each other. I put it down to some sort of mating thing or even a pecking order thing. The important thing is they never seem to hurt each other. I would add another 1 or 2 if you have the room as they do better in bigger numbers. Is your tank 5 foot as they like the length of the tank to dart around, and they do get big quite quickly!
Any pictures?

Hi Nath1

Thanks for the reply and putting my mind at rest they dont seem to hurt each other no,
and yes there growth rate from when i have had them
is pretty staggering! My tank is 5Ft yes so they do enjoy darting up and down it :D

You are very local to me btw as I live on Hayling.

Sorry about the not great pic, but they dont stay still long enough, have any pics of yours ?

Hello mate, seem's like normal behavour, mine used to do that alot when smaller, now matured around 14inch there alot more placid, as said if they are not actually hurting each other i would not worry, you will notice most fish do something similar to a degree :good:

like how you have mixed your substrate, nice oscar and dollars

Agree with Nelly,
My silver sharks used to rub against each other but because of their size they would knock each other a good few inches when they did it!
'youdirtyfox', i will try to down load some pics of my tinnies later on in the week. Im at work at the mo and shouldn't really be on here!

:fun:

So what are you guys feeding your barbs then, mine eat flake and pea's so far, but they always nibble at
tubifex (usually leaking out of oscars gills!) and go for his pellets too

I feed mine frozen bloodworm, prawns, cichlid floaters, jmc catfish pellets and flake.
They will also eat lettuce and cucumber that i chuck in for my silver dollars and plecs.
Anything that fits in the mouth is food!!

Oh wow, what cute little guys- I haven't seen smaller tinfoils in awhile. I kept a tinfoil/bala shark combo for quite a few years awhile back. Definitely one of my favorite setups. Nice gravel and sand mix!

here's my little babie's if your intrested
