Redtail sharks grow to about 10cm right, but how fast do they grow to that size

actually they should get to about 15cm and in a decent sized tank they should be reaching that in probably the first 12 months

tank sized should be around 50G (190L+)

one of my first red tails got to about 9 inches (he was HUGE!!!) and that was in an 80 litre tank. he was rehomes to a friends tank and to this day is still doing well. nearly 9 years old by now i think!

I think my redtail is a smoker. Something is certainly stunting his growth. He is growing, but he is just over a year old and he is about 4 inches

Had mine for arround a month and hasnt grown any bigger is arround 5cm in total lenght. its not as if he is starving himself as hes the first to feed at meal time

I know with my rainbow shark (close cousin of the red tail, only outside difference is fin color) he was about 4 inches in 6 months. By a year he was about 6 inches. After that his growth slowed, but he is now pushing about 6 and half.

I'm sure tank size and diet are playing a part in his growth. I'm no expert in stunting fish and I'm not sure when stunting starts(if there is even is a start) etc. but 70 liters which works out to about 18 gallons US 15 UK is to small for a red tail shark. He needs at least a 50 gallon and anything bigger the better. These fish are pretty long and robust and have a lot of swimming power. He's going to need more space.

Also something that my rainbow shark loved which I'm sure you red tail will like is these little sinking tablets. There called TetraMin Tropical Tablets. He loved them when he was little(I haven't given to him now that he is bigger, Don't now why really) I know with my shark I was always giving him go variety. Try things like frozen blood worms, frozen brine shrimp, blanched lettuce. I'm sure a good diet and more space will defiantly promote some good growth in him in a few months time.

Good Luck,

Tiger Lotus :)

if you had 2 when they mature there fight till theres only 1. mines grown loads since i got him not just length but hes alot chunkier now and alot brighter! loves bloodworm, beefheart and catfish pellets, not so keen on flake!

Mine loves flake, courgette and daphina (not fed bloddworms yet, must get some soon!), he is very dark and has a bright orange tail so must be very healthy
