Lets play a game. I tell you my plan an you tell me what you think about it. Yay!
I want to replace the sand in my established, well stocked (maybe a little too stocked...) 37 gallon tank. I also want a new 15 gallon dwarf chiclid tank. So here's the plan... I have two 15 gallon tanks and a 5 or 10 gallon sittng around empty... I go and buy the sand, filter, heater etc for the new 15 gallon, and the sand for my 37 gallon. I setup the 15 gallon and cycle it with some feeder goldfish which I have because I have 2 turtles. I have 2 small internal filters and extra gravel, so I will also temporarily setup the other 15 gallon and 5 gallon the same way... I will probably do bi-weekly or tri-weekly water changes on these two because the filters aren't big enough for the tanks. I then move my fish from the 37 gallon into these three tanks, replace the gravel with sand, and re-cycle the tank... the spikes shouldn't be too high because I have a bio-wheel which I assume houses most of the bacteria but I dont want to take any chances. I might have to cut the filter intake tube because right now it's about 3 inches from the bottom and I dont want any sand getting into my filter. I then slowly restock the 37 gallon, take down the other two tanks, and I am left with a 37 gallon with sand and a cycled 15 gallon ready for some chiclids. Bueno?
