I've never been a fan of fancy goldfish since they just strike me as... deformed for the most part. However, I just got in a new oranda as a rescue - special needs as he is missing his "swimming" flippers. Presently, he is extremely ill, very underweight, and pretty badly wounded due to being kept in a very overstocked petco tank full of Koi. However, he made it through the night and is undergoing intensive treatment, and seems much peppier this morning.
However, I'm guessing I can't treat him the same as a common? I hear Orandas are prone to all kinds of problems, from swim bladder to hole-in-the-head. I know his food should be pre-soaked, and he did fine with pre-soaked goldfish and herbivore pellets last night. However, can he have fresh veggies, or can they cause a problem? How about blood worms/brine shrimp/krill? How can I maintain strong enough filtration? (He strikes me as a terribly weak swimmer, which is only made worse by his disability) Since he has trouble swimming, should I get him a friend (another oranda) when I have a big enough tank, or should I stick to something safer like a couple of hillstream loaches?
Maybe these are silly questions. I just am nervous about him since he looks so fragile compared to my big, tough, healthy commons.
