I have 3 Red tails between 2 tanks and since providing them with enough cover/cave they seem to have become predominatly nocturnal. They do show themselves during the day (the 2 young more than the adult I have) but as I turn lighting down (no my large tank is far from being over lighted) they become more active.

I was just wondering how many people have
a. a hollow log, cave etc for their red tails

and
b. for those that do have a good hide how nocturnal are they

My RTBS is pretty active. He has a cave which is his territory although he does let my golden nugget Pleco share it (no-one else though  ). He probably spends half his time in the cave and the other half swimming around the tank. I haven't noticed his behaviour differ at night but i have read that they are inclined to be nocturnal.

i got log and rock caves in my community tank, but my red-tailed black doesnt seem to spend much time at all hiding - hes normally too busy harrassing my barbs!! i'd say 75% of the tanklit time he's out and about being a nuisance...

saying that, my parents have a pair of red-finned (as opposed to red tailed) sharks and these seem to spend a lot more time hiding away than my rtb. the smaller of the two especially hardly ever seems to come out into the open - i think its because the larger one bullies it so much
