My g/f thought she would surprise me with a RTBS when I got home from work. It's a female so I know it'll grow a little larger then males and right now it's swimming around in a 20g tank I had leftover. I do have a 30g I can move it into, but I'm already aware I need a tank along the lines of 50g or larger for this fish. What I wanted to know is this:
What kind of fish work well with these guys? I know they are moody fish, and I know its possible as it grows older it will just chase/stress/possibly kill some tankmates. I also know they aren't a large fan of light so once we turned off the aquarium light it stopped hiding and swam around more. I would like to add some fish that dont need much light either or this will be a pretty empty tank. Any suggestions? I found a 60g tank/stand/ lid/lights/filter/heater/decoration combo online for $200 and very tempted to get it since the filter is worth $200 new alone

I like the look of Jaguar Catfish and I know they can get alot bigger then the RTBS but they are slower growing as well

I have mine with 6 tiger barb, 6 bueno aires tetra, 2 bolivian rams, and a pleco currently in a 55g. They all get along perfectly and have never had any trouble.

What do you do about the lighting or do they adapt to lights being on during the day? For my pictus tank we painted the back/sides black so its really dark inside and since then they've been swimming around instead of just trying to find spots to hide

I just have basic lights that came with the aquarium, only like 30w total and I have never had any problems with it swimming around. I have about 4 caves that it loves swimming in and out of.

Here is what the tank looks like atm:

Alright thanks. I do like the look of Tiger Barbs but they aren't sold too often here because of their aggressiveness. Instead the stores sell Five Banded Barbs which while look close, aren't really aggressive so wont be able to hold their own again the shark. They do sell Blue Colombian Tetra which are known to be semi aggressive fin nippers like Tigers and look like baby Piranhas, wonder if those would be a good enough substitute as I was wanting to get them but ran out of room in my main tank for now unless some fish die down the road
