Hey guys! Quick question for you..

I've recently noticed that one of my sunset platy's has a red spot on top of her head. She's acting perfectly normal and the water levels are great (amonia-0, nitrite-0, nitrate >10) I tried to get a pic but she wouldn't stand still long enough

Is this something to be concerned about? or do platy's develop these markings sometimes?

thanks!

Valerie

ps- this was posted in the tropcial chitchat but no one responded... maybe someone will here?

It could be the start of a bacterial infection, or it could be a mark left by a fish louse.

both can be fatal and need treating asap, use malachite green and do daily water changes to keep the water "clean". (don't forget to top up meds after a watercange)

Hi Wolf and Def,

The spot is a dark red circle right onthe top of her head.. about the size of her eye. it's the same colour as her tail (she's a sunset play so yellow/orange body and darker red tail) I'm not sure exactly when it appeared but I know that it wasn't there a month ago.

If it is a bacterial infection or a fish louse.. are they contagious? The others all appear ok atm..

thanks so much for your help.. i'll try the medication and see what happens.

Valerie
