The last few days ive had a few guppies die
Ive done a water change and when watching the tank very closly ive seen that a few of the guppies have little red spikes sticking out of there bums...
What is it and how do i treat them?

Camallanus

Symptoms:

When the fish is stationary, deep red worms can be seen protruding from the anal pore. They are only visible when the fish is still because the worms retreat into the intestine at the fishs slightest movement. Other signs may include an inflamed and enlarged anus. In severe infestations, the fish may become emaciated and spinal curvature may also occur.

Cause:

The parasitic worms Camallanus Cotti and Camallanus lacustris. These small, livebearing parasitic worms attach to the intestinal walls and rectum with pinchers. The worms grip is so tight that any attempts to remove it forcibly will rip away tissue from the intestinal wall. The worms pinching causes ischemia (reduced blood flow) to that part of the intestine. In time, the tissue to that part of the intestine will die, at which time the worm will migrate to another part of the intestine. This causes perforations throughout the intestine, which allows other pathogens to gain entry. If the fish is not treated, either the parasite or bacterial will kill the fish. Camallanus infestations occur most often in livebearing fish such as Guppies and Mollies, though infection is possible in all fish. Camallanus infestations are contagious. All fish, including those not yet showing visible symptoms, as well as the aquarium, should be treated.

Treatment:

Treat with Internal Parasite Guard, Pipzine, Disco-Worm, Trichlorfon or Fluke-Tabs as well as a medicated food to prevent a bacterial infection.

A pic of camallanous worms.

I brought a red male guppy 3 days ago and I have just noticed the same thing. I thought it was a red poo however on closer inspection it looks like red spiders legs are coming out of his anus there only two but one is considerably long so gutted the tank has been doing fine for the last year I buy a new fish and it brings this into my tank.

What are the chances of it spreading?

You can get this med for camallanus worms in the UK.

A fish only has to suck up some fish waste and it can pass onto other fish,
You need to treat the whole tank for camallanus worms.

Know what I'm going shopping for tomorrow.

I'm not due for a 70% water change for another 2 weeks would you recommend me bringing it forward to clear some debris from the gravel before treating or should I treat and then do the clean?

Would the treatment kill the parasites in the waste?

What are the chances of it spreading?

If one fish in the tank has visible Camallanus worms, then you can almost guarantee all the others are infected. The life cycle of Camallanus worms is long, although it depends on the tank conditions, but it may go undetected for long period of time, even up to 3 months before you start seeing worms coming out of their back ends. Chances are your fish were already infected before you introduced the new fish. You need to do a lot of siphoning of the gravel to prevent them spreading as much as possible and immediate treatment.

This tank is the oldest Of my three and has been set up for around 2 years so I'm kinda thinking it was the new fish rather than my tank?

The spikes coming out of their bums is the last stage of the cycle that goes on itside the fish itself and it takes quite a while for the worms to start coming out. If you've seen that in your older fish before they died, considering you only have the new one for a few days, then the source is your tank and maybe even the newly bought one was coincidentally infected.
But honestly, I can't be sure and it doesn't really matter. You need to treat them as soon as you can. Wish you the best possible outcome :good:

It's the newest one that has it he was introduced 3 days ago. But I see what your saying and I am off to buy the treatment tomorrow.

Would you recommend I do a deep clean before I add the treatment? Or shall I concentrate on the treatment to begin with?

I would do a good siphoning to remove any worms, larvae of the nasties. Depending on the type of camallanus worms some need immeadiate host like fish to eat the worms straight away, some can spread out via the gravel in larvae stage and there's no way of knowing which type yours have. Even if they stop throwing out worms, be careful as they can stay infected with no visible signs. I have no idea what the best treatment is and hopefully someone will come around to advise as if I were you I would want this gone the first time I treat :/

I have found a treatment that looks and sounds to be effective with the first treatment. People have said that they have been able to find dead worms in the tank the next morning after treatment. Just have to get right in in there and pray this works I love all my little guys!!

They can die during treatment from blockage if the worms die inside them. Hopefully they haven't developed inside yet and you get away with it. Poor little guys, they can't even scream to tell us what to do to help :-(

What the name of the treatment you are using?
