Hello :)
Gills are usually red.
Is it gasping at the surface ?
Is there anything inside gill ?
Other fishes with same symptoms ?
What are pH GH KH ?
Did you check NO2 NO3 NH3 and how ?

How long have you had the fish for?
Have you added anything in the 2 weeks before this started?

Check the water quality for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH.

Do a 75% water change and gravel clean the substrate every day for a week.
Make sure any new water is free of chlorine/ chloramine before it's added to the tank.

Hello Colin,

75% in one go ?
In France, most aquarists recommend 25% every 3 days until the water level is back to normal.
i kind of agree, might need to ease it in

You do water changes for 2 main reasons.
1) to reduce nutrients like ammonia, nitrite & nitrate.
2) to dilute disease organisms in the water.

Fish live in a soup of microscopic organisms including bacteria, fungus, viruses, protozoans, worms, flukes and various other things that make your skin crawl. Doing a big water change and gravel cleaning the substrate on a regular basis will dilute these organisms and reduce their numbers in the water, thus making it a safer and healthier environment for the fish.

If you do a 25% water change each week you leave behind 75% of the bad stuff in the water.
If you do a 50% water change each week you leave behind 50% of the bad stuff in the water.

I love 25% water changes, 50% when things are going pear shaped. I still think it is a birth defect.

I water change when my TDSmeter says "it's time" by always targetting lowest levels.
