So I just started a new tank and really enjoyed the phantom and minor tetras in my first tank. Well I go to the LFS and pick up some red eye tetras and RED minor tetras. I had forgotten there was a difference as they are both red and quite similar in appearance. Well I come down today and they are very different. For one one tetra in particular seems to chase another around and then another will step in and he will chase that one around and it goes on with different tetras swapping place. I have read that this species establishes a pecking order is that what is going on? I don’t observe and nipping or bumping just lots of swimming around while the other fish just chill.
I have a 36 gallon tank that is cycled and with several plants throughout the tank. I’m not particularly worried but wanted to see if someone else has had a similar experience .

Welcome to TFF!

How many of each tetra species do you have? 6 is sort of a minimum but more of each is better. To our eyes different species seem similar, but the fish can tell ;) Chasing is pretty normal tetra behavior in the same species or different 1s. It's part of the schooling behavior. With too few of a species, some fish can be picked on. Whether due to males fighting or hoping to spawn with females or food fights. With several fish of each kind, no 1 fish gets too much chasing. But watch for nipped fins, tetras are known for that.

Plants are good to break up sight lines & allow the chased to rest/hide from any aggression.

Can you post a pic or 2? We may have suggestions to help.

They have settled down, they seem to have stopped doing that for the most part. I have 6 of each. Don’t want to overload the tank without my centerpiece fish in there yet

What is your planned centerpiece fish? I'm glad things have calmed down :)

We'd still like to see pics...(nagging just a bit, lol)

Sorry I haven’t taken many photos on my phone yet, mostly using my to GoPro’s. I’ll have better ones when the Bolivian rams in. There is a tunnel under the drift wood as well
