Hi

Was wondering whether a red finned shark (who is very calm & peaceful) would be compatible and get along with a red tailed shark?

Thanks in advance

Sam

I'm not sure that red-finned and red-tailed sharks are a different fish but I know this for sure:

you can keep one or loads of each species of shark together. So it should be okay if they are different species of shark and you have a big enough tank.

OK, please ignore the previous poster (sorry!).

The red tail black shark is aggressive as it grows, becoming extremely territorial towards other RTBS and similar shape/habit fish (i.e. catfish, loaches, other sharks etc).

The other shark you refer to, I presume, is the ruby shark. SLightly more peaceful, but prone to the same aggressive actions when exposed to other similar fish.

The reason some people mistakenly believe that loads of them are fine together, is that in the petshop the sharks are young, and at a high density in a small volume, i.e. they cant generate territory.

Best bet is to pop to the library for a good fish book or three, and also just type in red tail black shark in google, although books are a much more creditable source (especially Baensch).

what sized tank? and what else is gunna be in the tank? that honestly will answer this question, i have experience with them both (rtbs and rainbow / ruby shark)

I had both a RTBS Epalzeorhynchos bicolor & a redfinned shark Epalzeorhynchos frenatus
together in a 100G with no territory issues at all, unfortunately I also had a
black shark Labeo chrysophekadion which eventually killed both of them.

so the answer is yes, given enough territory for each fish.

I had a 6" Red Tail Black Shark and a 4" Red finned shark in a smallish tank 24x12x15 - NO PROBLEMS maybe I was lucky - it was a very heavily planted tank .
