Hi,

I plan on getting a bigger tank sometime soonish and have been thinking about what to do with my small tank i have now. Its about a 10 gallon tank (~30x33x30cm) and i was thinking about housing a red crab in it. I would most likely make a little platform so that it has a space out of the water to sit under the light. But i was wondering if there are any other fish / invertebrates that i can also house with the crab or weather he would eat most other fish / invertbrates. Also how many red crabs do you recon i can put in the tank, was only thinking i could put one in.

Thanks for the info

Jon

I keep shrimp with my crabs. I know the books say you shouldn't, but my crabs can't read books!

I must have very lazy crabs because they have never tried to catch the shrimp - in fact the shrimp actually steal food from the claws of the crab!

I kept them (shrimp/crabs) together, then for a while they each had a separate tank. The behaviour in both changed a lot - they were less likely to be 'out and about'. I put them back together, and they went back to normal.

It was as if having the crabs mooching about gave the shrimps confidence, and vice versa!

Having somewhere for them to get out of the water is essential - mine spend a LOT of time out of the water. But, if you have more than one crab, have more than one 'perch' out of the water!

I have interesting pieces of bogwood which come up out of the water, and the bogwood has plenty of hiding spaces so that the crab can just duck out of sight if he wants to, instead of dropping into the water and scurrying for cover.

When you have your tank sorted out, please post pics!!

Red claws are a lot more peaceful than most people would claim.

You can try these for tankmates: guppies, platies, mts, giant ramshorn, amano shrimp, ghost shrimp.

Dont know how the ramshorns would do with salt but the others should be fine.

like a red claw crab? i had one of those, surprisingly, i didn't know it, but they can like hang upside down on some things. i had a safe piece of wood with some pieces to stand it up as land and hiding places for little fish in a 10g. i had the crab in there with a shell pile, the crab could stand upside down under the pieces of would. it's like spider man underwater.

there pretty cool, try to show us a pic when oyu get one. :good:

Thanks for all the advice and info. Think if i do get a crab it wont be until i get a bigger tank which could be as late as the end of the year.

When i do get one i'll most some pics. Think i'll most likely find a could of nice guppys or livebearing fish that can fish around in brackish water.

Thanks again
