Well, I looked at my red betta to find some pieces of his tail missing. I thought, maybe Hector got a peice of him in their fight? Well, I've changed the water multiple times since then, but I found a small piece of his fin on the bottom? I did a water change, but what could this be?

It could be fin rot, happened to my betta a few times. It can be black edged fins or red,and pieces do fall off as it get aggressive. I'd start treating him with some meds asap.

Also, if it's a newly cycled tank and the fins look torn, but red it may be ammonia burn...

His fins look like they've been torn, and I can see one more fin on the bottom... I will post pics soon.. I've been treating with Bio-Coat, adding salt and doing water changes. Note these are bowls with no filters.

He shows no sign of any parasite or disease. He's actually making bubble nests. Phew. Why would he nip his own fins?

Guys I could use some advice. So far, I've isolated him into his own corner so he can't flare or get flared at by the other fish. So far it hasn't gotten worse, but I still could use some advice. Thanks in advance. Also, the fins are red because the betta is red, I'm sorry I didn't say this in advance. Ammonia is at zero.

That has to happen to a betta at least once in his life....... i'd recommend melafix! The smell of it is kinda nice lol

you fight your bettas

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?! I don't fight my bettas! I just have their containers next to eachother so they can flare at eachother. I thought maybe he is stressed because he's always flaring and he's biting his fins for some reason. Don't ever say I fight my bettas

I have a red betta who often has a torn tail and when i first bought him it really worried me so i stripped his tank of all ornaments and gravel to let it heal then it frayed up again so we gave him his ornaments back and we have had him for over five months and every once and a while he does what we refer to as "blowing a tail" and it grows back without medication of any kind beautifully. None of my other bettas are like this so it is behaviour that is unique to his personality i suppose, as he is extra aggressive. I wouldn't medicate just keep his water clean if you do chose something i would go with bettamax as i have found it is excellent at helping tails grow back beautifully. He could be stressed with the presence of the other betta in which case i would chose to limit their viewing time and separate them completely until his tail heals up.

So far he's doing ok in his own little corner. Odd, all of the tearing bettas are red. :dunno:
