Hi

can i set up a marine tank to run a reef system on £800

I would have to buy everything though tank, filters etc etc etc.

Any recomendations on the type of system i should get?

Hmmm I am sure you could, but you probably need to get things second hand.

I am not even finished on my aquarium and i've spend over 2 grand (UK pounds) already.

Anyways with 800 quid I am pretty sure you could just about get everything, but second hand most probably.

It also depends what corals you want ?, what size tank, lightning, and so on.

Its definately possible and it really depends what type of system and corals etc you want for the tank.

Live rock will probably be your most expensive outlay as you can eaily spend £300 on live rock.
I would advise that you dont skimp on live rock, purchase as much live rock as you can possibly afford. If you went for a 100 gallon system then you will need 50kg at least and this will easily cost you in excess of £400. If you choose a smaller sytem than 100 gallons then your live rock will cost less of course but then you are limiting yourself to the type of fish for a smaller tank. (large tangs in a 50 gallon for example is not recomended)

How about deciding what size tank you would like to keep. If you have a location for it in the house then go and measure it and then see what tannks will fit this sze and work around it.

Good luck with your project :kana:

I've spent about £800 setting up my 20 gal (well its 25 gal but allowing for displacemnt I'd say there more like 18-20 left...). A 20 gal is hard work but do-able. If you think there is a possibility you couldn't handle (at least) weekly water changes and daily top ups for evaporation then stay away from small tanks - anything under 55 is considered small. On the other hand if you are on a budget and have the time to keep a close eye on you water parameters then a small tank is a lot cheaper to set up and run.
