Hey all

I recently acquired a 300L stocked tank which came with a Co2 system.

The tank is close to 20 years old and had a lot of established plants which the previous owner supplied Co2 for. They told me they would give me instructions as to how and when to use the Co2 as they had it on a timer but unfortunately they have ghosted me so now I'm stuck trying to figure it all out myself, one step at a time.

The information I have is:

1. The Co2 cannister seems to be almost a makeshift one which has an attachment straight to the inlet of one of the water filters (FX4).
2. The handle was tide shut leaving it always in the ON position. I assume the attachment to the extinguisher prevented all of the Co2 being sent to the tank in one go and would only release Co2 when the timer activated?
3. I showed an image to my local fish store and they told me the clear tube isn't safe to use for Co2 as the tubes are normally not clear. (I immediately disconnected the Co2 system and placed it to one side as a precaution). Is this true as I have seen clear tubing being advertised for Co2 at Amazon.
4. If this system is safe to use (I haven't changed any of the settings on the attachment), then could I just set up a timer like the previous owner had. If so, how many times a day would I need to activate this and for how long each time?

Any advice would be super appreciated.

Thank you all
