ok..this morning before i went to school, i checked my fishes, ALL seems alright but when i came back home in the afternoon, i was shocked that 1 silver dollar and 1 platy was dead...immediately, i did a 40% water change and realised that some of my remainning platys had finrot while my other silver dollar had velvet...i took the silver dollar out and put in a hospital tank with some velvet med while i treated the main tank with fin rot med...even though id id a 40% water change, de ammonia lvl was still 0.25ppm...and the last time i did a water change was 6 days ago and at that time, all water stats: ammonia, nitrite and nitrate were ALL good...with the exception of nitrate, all were 0...now i do not know what had happen...but all my fishes are stll eating well.. i also added some salt in the tank...what can i do?

ammonia:0.25ppm
nitrite:0.1ppm
nitrate:15ppm

tank size:20 gall planted
remaining tank inhibitants: 4 platys, 1 clown plec, 5 corys, 1 clown loach and 1 silver dollar...

tank equipments: 1 HOB filter with bio wheel, 1 internal filter and 1 air pump with air stone

Sounds like your tank has went into a mini cycle. How do you clean your filter? You clean it in old tank water yes? I wouldn't bother with the fin rot med, the best way to treat fin rot is daily water changes until you see signs of improvement. Incidentally your clown loach is far too big for the tank, you should rehome him asap.

Hope things get better soon.

Ok ignore the comment on the clown, its a pleco, and wont get bigger than 4inches, fine for ur tank size

However that silver dollar will get too big for the tank, rehome him before he gets too big

As for finrot, i would treat it, id use myaxin with some melafix, you cant really ignore something like fin rot, even with water changes it can and will still progress in many cases, better to try treat it than ignore it

What salt did u add into the tank?

If i were you, id do another water change 2moz, and start treatment with myaxin, you will need to increase the airation into the tank tho

Scooterchick was referring to the Loach which can grow to 12". As been mentioned, the Loach and Silver Dollar will need rehoming as they will outgrow the tank.
Can you get any pics of the fish?
As Scooterchick said, you are best doing water changes for now, just to bring down your water readings. Medicating at this point may prove a bit fruitless as finrot does have a better chance of healing with good quality water. Once your readings are fine, you can then medicate the tank.

Finrot in platies can be slowed with salt and even cured using salt. I used 2 grams/litre with 5x 1/2 hour seawater dips daily until it went away. I lost one platy and saved two others using this method. It is stressful to the fish and I would not recommend it unless you were desperate (I ran out of tetracycline.)

What finrot med did you add to the water? If it's antibiotics (sold as tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chloramphenicol etc. - anything that says antibiotics) OR one of the chemicals that stains (methylene blue, malachite green etc.) you will probably make matters worse by wiping out the filter bacteria. If your ammonia is already a problem be VERY careful about medicating the tank. You will have to do a LOT of water changes. Keep a careful eye on the ammonia level but if the medication contains formalin your tests will be useless. One of the ammonia tests (I don't think the indophenol reaction does but the other common one does) will read sky high whenever there is formalin in the tank, it reads formalin as free ammonia and the usual formalin concentration is about 25ppm.

If the levels are to high, more water changes will help, do them until you stable the levels again, then keep testing to make sure they are staying ok.

I agree the loach and dollar will need re homing.

hi u guys..thanks for the reply..i have just spoken to my father and he said i could get a bigger tank for my birthday next month :good: :good: ...anw..all my fishes look better today, more active and eating well...im only doing about 5% water change so as to let the med take effect...the fin rot med i am using is interpet no.8 anti fin rot and fungus...the velvet med i am using is copper aid, anti velvet...i did not change my filter pad and i washed it i old tank water, whih was months ago but at that time, the ammonia lvls were still 0...the salt i am using is for tropical aquariums...not any table salt or reef salt...i have raised the temp a little too...

ok..this is bad..real bad...i jus discovered that my clown loach is on is side, still alive and when i tap the glass a little, it swam aay quickly...supon further observation, i realised it has gold dusting, so i took it out and place it in the hospital tank for velvet treatment whith my silver dollar...anw it still lies on its side sometimes but will get up to swim...my silver dollar is not doing too well either...sometimes it too swims slanted, but not so bad

Sorry to hear that, I'm afraid it sounds like the velvet is in it's final stages. Sorry.
