Hello,

A few weeks ago I bought some Red Cherry Shrimps as an lovely addition to my main tank to make the bottom of tank far more interesting, seemed bare without them. Now can't imagine having a tank without shrimps!!

I thought was just getting RCS but seems there might be Fire Reds as well. Am unsure as telling the difference is beyond me as a newbie at the moment.

Be great if anyone can answer this basic question for me.

Am going to post a pic that has a group of shrimps enjoying an Algae Wafer.

The group in centre seems to be RCS but the two completely red ones, are they RCS, Fire Reds and the darker red one on the right, is that also an Fire Red?

Will they interbreed by the way?

I have had 2 females having eggs but were dropped, my fault mainly as made them jump twice, once by having problems with filter and made cloudy water and the other time by shutting the cabinet door too loud and have now since fitted soft close hinges!! Lessons learned!

BTW the fish that sneaked in the pic in background is a Threadfin Rainbowfish, not a shark or anything about to eat a shrimp or two!! lol

They look like RCS to me. There is a lot of variations within the species. Some are solid red while others are patterned red. Those are known as rillis. There are still others that are yellow, greed and blue. They will all interbreed because they are the same species. The wild type are green. You can control the types you have by seperating out the ones that you don't like.

Oh, am not going to separate them, just let nature take its course if that happens!

And yes, there does seem to be a lot of variations between shrimps, and for me, having a hard time telling which is which. lol

Seems searching pics on google, some says says definitely sakuras or RCs or Fire red or whatever really and others says the opposite!

Just wanted a plain and simple answer but seems there are no plain and simple answers!! lol

Am not overly concerned whatever species they are, am just enjoying their company in the tank and can be funny to watch them sometimes. Just wanted clarification for my own interests really.
