RAW Pine cabinet

Hey guys,
I have a raw pine cabinet and i would like to paint it in a beach colour.
1.When i have painted it, do i need to paint anything else over the paint??

2.Do i just put stain it to what i want and then laquer over it??

I'm planning on making a hood from pine for my 2ft tank, from what read yacht varnish is used. About 2/3 coats, but i'm not totaly sure.

From working years ago at a french polishing firm. I don't think laquer would not be enough protection, but I could be wrong. Plus laquer odours are nasty put me on a high laquering pub bars
