ok, im really gonna start getting into this breeding stuff, it is really interactive, more than just having decorations, and hey i might turn a few dollars right :p . so im going to buy a few smaller tanks ( 20's, 15's) to raise my fry in. but, in a little while when i get ahold of some money, i would like to find a fairly rare, not neccesarily hard to find, but rarely kept in aquariums, not many people have them kind of fish. the only tank im going to have available is a 29 gal. so i want a fish that a pair can be kept in a 29 gal, and is a unusually kept species, but not TOO expensive. any ideas???

Well, if they are inexpensive for you to buy, you won't get much for them from anybody. It just makes sense. The hot dwarf Apisto is A. sp. Inca that is selling for about $40 to $50 a pair. By the time anyone gets some and raises them up to sell themselves, every other breeder will have them and the price will drop to about $10 a pair. Sorry, but there is no money to be made by someone who has never bred fish before. Start out slow and try a few different fish. Sometimes the food cost is higher than what you get for the fish. There are about as many breeding methods as there are Genus'. Cichlids alone have, substrate egg layers, egg hiders and mouthbrooders.

i didnt say inexpensive, i was just saying im not looking to pay a couple hundred dollars for fish, because i dont have that kind of money. the money making is an ulterior agenda really, if i could trade fish for store credt and just get enough to get free food and filter pads and such that would be great, but im sure there is some profit to be made off selling babies, my cuzin sold jewel cichlid babies and has made seventy dollars off of it and jewels by no means are rare or expensive fish. i just want some rarely kept, and/or challenging to keep and breed fish, i would like a challenge and have a tank empty to try stuff in it. so again, anyone know of a challenging, exotic cichlid i could try?

Rarely kept species = BIG$$$$$$$$!!! To buy that is....

If a species is rarely kept it is usually for one of two reasons:

1. They are very expensive or

2. There is no market for them!!

Take it from a 10 year+ breeder....the cost is way more than the return.

If you really want to try breeding and have limited space and you want to be successful enough to trade for goods, then try angel fish.

The market for quality angels is always high, even though they are somewhat common.

A pair of angels will work well in a 29 gallon tank. Start out with 6 or so juvies, let them pair off and trade the rest.

Angels are also sometimes a challenge to get to breed so you will be killing two birds with one stone..... A challenging species to breed and a species that will give you lots of babies for trading.

Good luck with your venture.
