Hi guys. I went to LFS yesterday and they had what I though were baby gibbiceps, but was told they were infact ranger plecs and would only get to about 4 inches.

They have a catfish specialist at this shop, but it was his day off and the other guys couldn't tell me anything other than that it come from the Zingu and is pretty rare. I'm going back tomorrow and will probbably find out the L number if it is one, in which case I'll be okay, I've just bought Datz L no. mag.

If anybody has one or has heard of them, some info would be appreciated so I can sound clever tomorrow :p

Oh, and there is nothing under common names on planetcatfish.

Ranger Plecs are from the genus Pseudohemiodon and are strikingly patterened, flat bodied, triangular headed, pointy nosed and long bodied.

Most species can get up to twelve inches in length.

They're one of the genera sold in the hobby as 'whiptails' and there is absolutely no way that a member of the genus Pseudohemiodon could look like a gibby.

I couldn't find a picture of a ranger, but here's some pictures of other species of Pseudohemiodon.

Sounds to me like your LFS is either misinformed or a misinformer. ;)

I'll find out 2morrow when I go and see the guy who does the catfish. I'll let you know and try and get a pic of them. They're really small though.

hello, sorry a little off topic, but Crookster where's the lfs shop you talk of near halifax?
i'm just over in bradford, is it worth me comin to take a look?

cheers

The link below is the yell.com directory for it. They normally have loads of plecs, that's why I go there, they've some nice brackish fish too.

You might want to leave it a week or two though, when I was last there they just had a delivery but only got one box out of 9. At the moment they've got Orangr Seam, Blue Spot, L28 and candy stripe to name but a few. They've have the best selection of Lno.s I've seen.

He said they were a --------- ranger plec, I went and forgot what was infront. He also said they hadn't been assigned an L number yet, but they were definately a lorricade. He also said that he is quiet friendly with a woman on a farm in South America which lets one box a year out and he got it.

I was tempted but I went for the safe option of another Orange Seam (106).

Just thought I'd drag this one up with some pictures of ours :)

This is what they looked like when we got them...

And this is one of them now (the others are still smaller - this one is on a growth spurt :)

hmm...

I going with Planet catfish... the patterns on the fishbase plecs are different...

But this is the reason I got them - No-one knows much about them :)
We've actually got 5 of them now
(an interested party failed to meet me after I bought them for them and hasn't been in contact since)
