ive posted before on this subject but no one replied, im desperate here about my two rams.
im considering whether i have made a mistake by adding rams to my tank.
as you might have read before, my male ram keeps hiding in the plants in my tank, when the female goes near the plants he seems to attack her by chasing her and nipping her.
all i need to know is whether this is normal or if they are incompatible.
i am considering getting rid of the male because he seems to aggresive.
someone in this site must know something about their behaviours,
please please please reply because im at my whits end.

it can be normal for rams to be agressive towards one another. they are cichlids after all. they all have different tempers and some do not tolerate other rams at all.. i guess it is normal.

what size tank are they in?

Hmmmmm I'm no ram expert but it sounds strange to me. My rams have the odd moment now and again where they have a little bicker but then about 5mins later they are best mates again swimming no more than 3" away from each other. Are they always like this or do they hang around sometimes?

When did you add these fish to the tank? What size tank is it? Did you just choose a male and a female from the store?

Most importantly (and don't take this the wrong way, as i have no idea how much experience you have). Are you SURE they are a male and a female? It sounds like male/male agression to me...

im sure its male and female, at my lps the bloke sed to me the females have a red tinge in the centre of their belly, one of my rams have got this so i took it for granted one was male one was female.
does anyone else know any other things to look at to determine their sex.
the tank is 60cm long by 30 cm wide.

When these fish are establishing relationships they can get very aggressive. Since there's no other females to increase the chances of a pairing or distribute aggression you'll find it might get out of hand. They will likely work it out in time, but only if the male doesn't harass the female to death. If the aggression looks like it's too much then you might want to try installing a clear divider to seperate them.

thanks for your help guys, i had a chat with my lps, they said the f rams have got a red tinge when they are ready to breed.
the 2nd blade on the dorsal fin on males is longer than females.
ive managed to calm my rams down now, and they seem ok, i have added another female so their is now 2 females and 1 male.
ps lps said that they will sometimes look like they are kissing and wave their tales, he said this is for show of aggression.
