Anyhoo, i've had my pond for quite a while now- i did intend to move my indoor goldfish out into the pond last year, but due to the unusually extremely rainy and cold summer we had last year the pond never rose to warm enough temperatures for the goldfish to be safely and happily moved out into it. So the goldfish ended up remaining indoors while their lovely big pond sat outside awaiting to see them the next year. Next year is now though, and again another summer of opportunity is coming along in the near future, and i want to move the goldfish out into the pond badly now (don't worry they haven't outgrown the tank they're in)- i don't care if we get another wet cold summer, i'll put damn heating in the pond if i have to.
So taking into consideration that the goldfish are definitely going in the pond this summer no matter what, i now have the problem of frog spawn. Last year the frogs layed quite a lot of frog spawn in the pond which hatched out into hundreds of tadpoles which then grew into cute little frogs ^_^ . This year though the frogs have layed absolutely masses of the stuff in comparison to what they did last year, and i don't want the goldfish to gorge themselves on all the tadpoles when they go into the pond.

I really like the frogs, i hear them singing on cool late evenings and the frogs do wonders for the garden by eating all the slugs and woodlice etc- so i want to try and save some of the frog spawn and hatch the stuff out into tadpoles, which i will raise in a spare aquarium. I very vaguely remember raising tadpoles into frogs in the biology lab at school when i was a kid, but as i said i only vaguely remember, so...I was reading this article on raising tadpoles;

<a href="http://allaboutfrogs.org/info/tadpoles/" target="_blank">http://allaboutfrogs.org/info/tadpoles/</a>

Does the article in the above link advice/info sound correct? Is there anything else more that i need to know on raising tadpoles :) ? Any advice/info is appreciated  .

Wow its really nice what you wrote,
I have been thinking of raising tadpoles into frogs then releasing them to help have more in my garden,
I remember cool evenings in the summer with frogs singing but that was a long time ago recently there has been very little noise...

Made me really want those nights to come....

Do they grow faster in warmer water????

I.e tropical, can they even survive in tropical tank?

Yeah it's a great idea. I did this last summer, I think I took about 10 tadpoles and raised them until they were pretty much adults (apart from most of them still had their tails) I can't ever remember feeding them lettuce though, that's a new one on me. I just took some of the pond water and put it in a spare tank, scooped them up and put them in. Happy as Larry!

what would be the damage to a planted tank?

I'm considering putting them with my neons untill they get to large and want to eat them....

because I doubt the neons could eat them

Tadpoles are hardy. Most get eaten in ponds, so it's always worth some trial and error if they have a greater chance of survival in your hands.
All I remember feeding them were blood worm and they loved it.

Damn good point I have a tub of blood worm unsured,
My fish are to small :p

The tadpoles of our common frog (Rana temporaria) are opportunists but if you are going to offer them anything it should be plant based as they are really more herbivorous.

Ideally if you plan to keep some in a small tank, with some pondweed for them to graze on and hide behind, feed them a good quality fishflake mixed with ground spirulina tablets

I'd hesitate to mix them with your fish as they could rapidly cause the nitrates to skyrocket :good:

Thanks for all the advice/info and nice comments everybody, i really appreciate it :good: . I have one more question though- do you think it would be beneficial to filter the tank at all with a gentle filter or do you think the tadpoles would prefer being kept in a tank with no filtration and just regular water changes to keep the water quality clean etc?

You could use something as delicate as an interpet airstream filter for your little guys but due to the grow, Grow, GROW and leggit! development of your wee froggies their water is going to need regular changes anyway :good:

you shouldnt worry about cold water foir your goldfish. from what i seen they can live in waters without heaters. i read that they can even survive water with thetop frozen. but cold water might make them less active and have less appatite.sry for my bad spelling.

Meh, well i was too late to grab some frog spawn out of the pond, it seems to almost all have hatched out over night :hyper: ! But i guess i can still grab some tadpoles and raise them either way  .

They will be fine without a filter and some weekly water changes.

If you have spare blood worm lying around, I'd certainly recommend it.

i am doing the same. collected 1 of 2 batches. hatched overnight. went back out to the pond. the frogs laid another batch!!!
