I am going to be setting up another 10g tank next week and wanted to make it so that some of the gravel would be higher in one section than another. I was thinking about stacking some rocks and covering those with gravel when I filled the tank, or just an extra bag of gravel dumped into a corner.

Are there any better solutions?

hi there

I think either way is good, but remember water current and cleaning and also the fish are going to keep moving the substrate. I tried it a while back and after 2 months I had bare rocks on one side and a tons of gravel in the other. to keep putting you hand into the tank to shift the gravel/sand around is going to cause a lot of stress and some people might disagree but fish know when things keep changing ...

I,ve seen alsorts done siliconing a pice of glas or acrilic works wellthen cover it with some wood or rocks.

Personaly i just place some rocks or bogwood there to hold back the substrate.

Takashi Amano has a tank where the gravel in the back is halfway to the top of the tank. The front has about 1 inch of gravel. I presume that he just threw in gravel and pushed it towards the back of the tank, he must have had to periodically push the gravel back if he did that.

Not sure, sand isn't the best thing to do it with... I'll have a look for the PFK article on creating a Chinese River tank, that has substrate like that.

i have 2 raised areas in my tank.

on one side i put a semi circle of rocks and filled it with gravel, then another semicircle and added gravel behind that.

you can see my tank here

on the other side i used a giant piece of rock. its about 2.5 feet long but it curves nicely so i jus filled behind it with gravel.

none of its moved so far!

I just build a pile of rocks across a corner then fill it in with gravel, works fine. Thus my tank has a step at either end. The final result usually looks pretty good.
