can 6 rainbow sharks go with a red devil and parrot fish in a 55 gallon tank? I have a 29 with 4 very unhappy rainbow sharks in it. I want to get two more rainbow sharks to lower aggression. My sister is setting up a 55 gal in 4-5 months so when they start getting bigger I could put them in there, but she has parrot fish and is planning on getting a red devil. Is this a good idea.

no all the way around. tell your sister adding that red devil is a really bad idea. a single red devil needs at least a 55 or 75 gallon alone or divided with a mate. the best thing she can hope for is that the red devil will pair up and breed with a parrot but still the tank is rather small for when the fish get bigger. if this does happen then I doubt the red devil would allow any other fish in the tank with them. if there is no pairing then I'd suspect the red devil will eventually be alone in her 55 gallon.

for 6 rainbow sharks I'd look at a minimum of 75-125 gallons. you're talking about eventually having 6 territorial bottom feeders at 6" ea. Yes, having them in the group will lessen aggression but that doesn't mean there will be no aggression at all. these fish will still need their space. :)

From what I understand, putting ANYTHING with a red devil is pretty risky, and in a tank that small, I'm going to venture to say that the devil would tear that parrot up, given enough time.
I've got a midas hybrid(closely related to red devils) and an oscar in an 80 gallon right now, and I'm expecting to have to move the midas when she gets bigger even in a tank that size because she'll probably get more territorial and beat my oscar up, if that tells you anything. When they were both in my 29 gallon she easily beat up the oscar, who is nearly twice her size. They don't call them devils for nuthin

really. well thank you very much. Ok I know this is the wrong forum but I think I have some people talking who know a bit about it. If I bought a 100 gallon tank and put six red-finned sharks in there then how much more could I add? Woule they need to be alone in the tank or could i put in say a common pleco and a pictus catfish maybe 3?

should I get a large surface area tank, or a tall one? No brainer right. :)

Large footprint for that many bottom-dwelling fish, definitely.
I don't think you could manage any more bottom dwellers in a 100 gallon with six red-finned sharks, but you might be able to get a compatible mid or top dweller

well CRAP. I got conned by my lfs and now I have a common pleco. So he couldn't go into a 100 gallon with the rainbows? Could I possibly keep just four if I get a 100 gallon?

I think 4 would be ok, and you might even be able to manage the plec with 4... might. I've never owned rainbow sharks, so I'm not all that familiar with their aggression level. You might want to ask someone who knows more about rainbows on that one :/

sooo. cyprinids forum. thanks anyway guys. If anyone comes across this or the one in chit chat feel free to post cuz i'll keep checking them.
