I just got a 14 gallon fish tank for a few weeks ago(i had one for years when i was younger, but when i let it go) and naturally I went and got some fish for it, but as i have started to read about the fish i bought i realize they may not be the best for each other.
I got one rainbow shark and five tetras - two have died so i am down to three. I had to put the fish in a small five gallon old tank at first as my new one appeared to be leaking, btu they are all doing well in the 14 gallon tank.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what else to put in the tank, ideally i would like to have schooling tetra's, the rainbow shark, and a couple others, but i dont know how feasible this is. the rainbow shark harassed the tetras in the small tank, which i expected, but seems to care less about him in his new home. I had two bala sharks for 6-7 years when i was little in a similar size tank with tetra's and a red tail shark
i am open for all suggestions here

I'm afraid the rainbow shark will need a tank of around 50gallons when he startes to mature, if kept in the 14G he will show too much aggression as he will take up the whole tank as his territory and will not like sharing it with any other fish.
the tetras should be ok, depending on the dimensions, what type of tetras are they?
bala sharks are a definite no, they should be growing to around 13inches and in a 14g they would just be suffering.

They are just neon tetra's, i was thinking i would stock about 6-7 and then a couple of those dwarf gourami's. I will be moving into a larger place in the next 6-8 months and plan to get a larger aquarium (hopefully about the 50G size), but i wanted to get a smaller tank to get my feet wet again since i have not had a tank in a bit of time.

should be fine then, although you may have to re-arrange the tank if the shark shows some aggresion to the newly added fish.

Thanks for all of your help, but I ended up having to return my rainbow shark since he started atacking the tetra's all the time no matter what i did for the tank (when i get a bigger tank i will get one again). I got a african spotted catfish instead that is very mellow and could careless about anything else in the tank.

cheers

do you mean a synodontis when you say yellow spotted catfish ?

you may want to get an id on that because it could well outgrow your tank
