I have a 5” rainbow shark in my 55g. He seems to breathe rapidly, about 120 times per minute. I have read that these fish need high oxygen water.
However, I have read that some aquarium salt in the water can aid gill function. I wonder, should I use salt in my tanks as long as I have no catfish or loaches? Does it help most fish if used in the right amount?
Is my rainbow shark a catfish? He does have barbells, so I wonder….
I have no reason to suspect he is sick, he eats and swims as usual. He stays in a cave often too.
Water stats are amm and nitrite 0, nitrate 8, Ph 7.1, kh 95
