i have to say ur idea is mint, about puttin ur own wood in the tank... i was takin a stroll today near the pond (in the park) and was this thing stickin out... only a little bit of wood but it has an amazin shape... only problem is i have no idea what type of tree it came off... or if it matters?

well i soaked it for 6hrs an nothings come off it... then i decided to take the top layer of bark off (ewwwww cruddy bark) i soon saw the dirt, its been soakin again for another 3 hrs... when do u think i could be safe puttin it in the tank? or even if its safe at all..

I'm not sure about the species either, but it looks clean. Maybe you should soak it for a week (or more), just to be sure it's ok. And then put a fish in the bucket with the stick for a day or two. It's best to try with only one fish than with your whole tank.

Usually they are ok, but just recently a finnish aquarist bought a pine trunk from a flea market and it killed all the fish in the tank. We suspect that it was treated with some sort of substance (polished or smth) and the substance killed the fish, not the wood itself.

But yours was taken from a pond, so at least it's not treated in any way. If it doesn't smell or color the water, it is propably ok.
