I have noticed over the last couple of days that my betta’s fins have started to look raged and a bit tatty. Does any body know what this could be? Is it fin rot?

He is the first betta that I have owned and I want to do the best for him, does anybody have any advice for what I can do.

He is in a 5.5 UK gallon tank, heated and filtered with a large artificial plant (silk) and a couple of plant pots.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

Could he be snagging it on a plant? Or dragging it across the gravel?
That happens quite often.

Is there anything i can do to help the healing process, i have heard the putting in salt can help but i dont want to do anything that could do more harm than good

A pinch of salt would help with bacteria, although that may not even be necessary if it's not turning in to "fin rot". You could take the plants out and test them on a pair of pant hose, if they snag- you have your culprit.

Ok will do, hadn't thought of testing the plants on tights have plenty so thats not a problem :D

He's my baby  and i want to do the best for him.

Thank you so much.

Hi Silverlady

Yep he was the one that went through the whole of the clay pot, didn't notice anything wrong after he had done that, its only been in the last couple of days, and the only thing i have changed is the plant, so i am praying its that and not the start of anything worse.
