What exactly are these things, iv never actualy paid much attention and been hearing alot about these latley, what do they do and what are they for?

Do you mean an R.0 Unit? Its used for purifing tap water. Removes KH, GH, NitAtes etc

So it makes tap water perfect for the aqaurium without adding conditioner then basicaly?

Ro water is purified so there are no minerals, chlorine, chloramine, or other contaminants. You are starting with a blank slate, 7.0 ph, incredibly soft. Using straght ro is a bad idea, being so soft causes the ph to swing wildly, there is no hardness to stabilize it.

You have to add minerals & such to adjust the hardness, as well as the ph if needed. http/www.rockymountaindiscus.com/rofaqs.htm has a pretty good article on using ro in the aquarium.
