My bala shark (bruce) died yesterday. Its the first death I have had since introducing fish to the tank and was wondering if anyone could give me a insight as to why he died.. Its a fairly small tank (10 gallons) wich has one cory dora a black moor and 5 danios (and obviously the bala shark) all the other fish seem perfectly fine. Ive even taken the danios out last week as i thought they were about to spawn but they never andi put them back after 4 days and they have been fine. But yesterday was the first time i added a algae waffer to the tank and with in 20 mins bruce( god rest his soul) had died. I done a 30% water change immediatly after taking him out aswell.. Like i said all the other fish seem fine i was just wondering if theres any reasons for this or if it happens regulay. There are 3 plants in the aquarium wich has a coral sand bed and only an few stones so theres plenty of room in the tank for the fish to move about easilly..

do yu have your test results at all?

Also you have mixed Tropical (Cory/Danio/Bala) with Coldwater fish (Blackmoor), these fish require very different water conditions and won't last long in the other.

Also your 10 gallon tank is too small for all your fish i'm afraid

Sorry to hear about Bruce, hope we can get to the bottom of his death

ph in the tanks is about 7.3 is this to high. i am new to this you see and my local fish shop while very freindly and cheap dosent seem to knowlegable. he sold me all the fish i got so he new what i had in the tank and said they would be fine tank mates for my black moor wich ihad first
the bala shark was the latest addition..

how long has the tank been running?

Unfortuneatly most shops just tell you what you want to hear to get money from you, however you will get the best advice from the members here :good:

fortunatly i done a bit of reasearch before going out an buying it, wich was lucky because i had no idea about cycling. I set it up 11 weeeks ago added the black moor after about 4 weeks then the cory and danios another month later. The shark was about a week in there.. i

hello and welcome to the forum and to fishkeeping

can you tell me what temperature your tank is at please?

also as already ben mentioned the tank isnt suitable for all the fish..the blackmoor alone would be adequate with maybe a pond snail for algae control but no heater.... as a coldwater tank its also suitable for small fish like mountain minnows.

if you would like a tropical tank then you would need to take the moor back to the shop and this will increase what you can have....what filtration are you using at the moment as undergravelisnt suitable for sand tanks?

the bala is a fish that hates confined spaces..they need company of their own kind and can grow 10 or so inches...stress would probably have killed it as they need to be in 4ft plus tanks with own kind to feel better....but saying that i had two with two common goldies in a four foot tank in tropical conditions quite successfully for a couple of years before all needed re homed..so it can work but on a larger scale.

as you are new to fishkeeping i suggest you read around a bit and ask questions if youre thinking of adding a new companion, and stick to whats in the coldwater section if thats what you want to keep.

please keep posting on anything youre unsure of..
