Got one of the Rena ones in a tank in a bedroom and you cant really hear it unless you are close to it, although I put a bit of bubblewrap under it for extra insulation. First one we tried came from pah and it was like a washing machine on full spin in comparison.

Cheers zesty, i went for the rena 200 as my tank is 125L, also gone for an 8" airstone to go at the middle back of my tank

do they get hot?
and can it be screwed down or to a wall?:

I have just gone and looked at the one we have and I would say it gets warm to the touch but by no means hot.
I couldnt see any way of screwing it down but maybe you could cable tie it to something and then fix that to the wall, but if it were me I would want it in the cabinet to reduce noise further.

It may be a bit late now, but if you want a reliable air pump, you aren't going to get one that is quiet also... To make the pump less noisy, you use a thiner Diaphragm. This wears out faster. For a more reliable pump, you use a thick diaphragm, but the extra weight of the moving part will increase the pumps noise during operation...

But diaphragms usually aren't covered by warranty. They are a part that's subject to wear and tear and hence exempt in all makes of air pump that I'm aware of   Superfish air pumps are the best I've come across for reliability. I've one thats 7 years old with all original parts and still going strong. Getting noisy now, but the output is good so I'm applying the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach. I still have the spare diaphragm it came with somewhere too if I can be bothered looking for it when it does eventually go...

All the best
