Hi there, Recently I've setup a small tank on my bedroom desk, an Arcadia Arc 35 litre tank, It's been running for about a week now, cloned from a much larger tank that's been running for years.. but the filter i'm using (an Eheim Aquaball) seems to make a fairly irritating buzzing noise. I was wondering if anyone knew of anything much quieter?

There are a set of fairly unused drawers nearby so an external would'nt be a bad idea but they all seem to be for much larger tanks so would this be over filtering?, are there any for small tanks like this or is there an alternative and much quieter internal filter I could be using?

Thanks!

p.s: apologies if this kind of topic has been done to death in the past but the "search forum" doesn't seem to be working!

Most internal power filters should be quiet. Eheims are normally very good so perhaps yours is worn or needs a new grommet on the end of the impellor shaft.
Aquaclear filters are pretty quiet.
Fluval and Eheim do small external power filters that can be used on small tanks. They might produce too much water movement in the tank but the outlet can be faced towards the side and this will reduce the water movement.

i use elite stingrays they are really quiet i dont hear any noise from them at all and even had one in the tiny tank i had in the bedroom

They are quite cheap on ebay :)

Thanks Sarah x

The size of them is ridiculous! here is mine in my 60l (before i got rid lol), better to go with a fluval+ or even their new range - the U series ( http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/...?article_id=713 )

ill sell ou a filter its called a magic-jet filter.it makes a bit of noise and does 200 litres per hour so how much you want it for message me
and i have got a fluval 2 for sale as well i thin might sell or might not

I do like the mentioned external filters.. especially as they would not take up any space within an already limited volume of water. I think under normal circumstances the eheim i'm currently using is fairly quiet.. but as it's in my bedroom i'm noticing it more (plus i'm a fussy twit sometimes).

The tank itself is also on top of a layer of polystyrene to prevent vibration transfer to the desk. What I like about the external filters mainly is that I could adapt a box or something for it to live in as much as I want to deaden any and maybe all sound... then all i have to contend with is the sound of water but that should be easy (engineering degree student here where we had in excess of 3 modules JUST on the flow of fluids.. although guilty.. i may have fallen asleep during some lectures...).

Do any of these come with the bar type of output? I'm not sure exactly what it's called but the kind of tube with holes along it.. I've heard these also improve the diffusion of oxygen into the water.. it's not important but I want the best I can get and the fish i'm sure would appreciate it. :)

btw thanks for the comments so far! it's a great help!

Agreed

Got rid of mine for a fluval 2 plus as soon as i could.

A fluval 1 might be ok for a 35L tank

they don't look too bad if i'm honest (the stingray filters) .. but like everyone seems to say.. they take up a lot of space.. visually at least.. and I can only see being remedied aesthetically by beinghidden by plants.

I have just been downstairs to check out what my dad uses on the other tanks, they're a fluval 3+ and a fluval 4+.. put simply... DEAD silent.. i mean there is the tiniest humm.. but it's convinced me the eheim i have is sounding a little rough.. i'm thinking a fluval 1+ is the way forward! Although, he does say that they got quieter with age.. is this normal or could it be a drop in flow efficiency that's just had an unexpected upside?

I have had my fluval1+ just over a week and its been silent from day one even had to check it a few times to make sure it is actually turned on there that quite

Only cost £15 aswell tho no doubt it can be bought cheaper

I got a small internal from "Pets at home" for under a tenner :good: Not a deal of media, but silent !
