I have a tank which is currently cycling, and I'd love to add some shrimp, Japonica/Cherry etc. I remember reading somewhere that you should add shrimp to a mature tank, but can't find where I read this. Is this the case or is my mind making things up (again!) ?

Thanks :)

As long as the tank is cycled you can add shrimp, they wont tolerate any nitrite or ammonia so the tank needs to be mature in that sense. I guess a tank that is running longer has less chance of ammonia or nitrite. I added shrimp more or less straight away with a filter matured in another tank without any problems.

it is usually best to add inverts to a mature tank. though your tank may be "cycled" after a month or so. the cycle is not actually finished till the tank matures. some creatures will not take kindly to a none mature environment. a mature tank can also mean that the fish have settled down in their community, when adding critters that may be at risk, from their tank mates. it may well be more successful, if you wait till this happens. it is thought that most tanks could be said to be mature after six months.

Its only a small 27litre tank. I think I'll try to stock it with a few fish first (when its cycled) and then in a month or so add a little group of Japonica, after the plants I've added (some grassy plants) have a chance to settle and grow a bit.

Thanks for the info :)
