Ok so, the female I have been fish sitting for a friend is in fact a female since she decided to release her eggs in my 10 gallon that i kept her in since she has been to violent to my 3 girls. But one thing I never did figure out was what type of betta she is.. I know by males it's easier to tell by the same of the fin most of the time. But how do you tell with females?

I asked her if I could keep her girl for another week to figure it out.

Sorry they arent the best pictures she kept moving.

you count the rays in there tail, looking at her fin spave i'd say probably VT

if you look at the link in my signature it explains how to tell females apart :good:

Thanks so much! That really helped, going to try and see for sure if that is what she is by going off your notes :) maybe even try to see what my own 3 girls are. :)

given the blur to the pics hard to tell, but agree with fishy on this. I think shes VT. Love her coloration!
cheers

Thanks, my friend was going to have her and her VT male as a pair, but now I am reading that it is actually best to have a different female and male? Just wondering if someone could tell me if that is really true or not.. I tried reading into betta genetics but I just about died.. (I never passed that specific test when it came to school either..)

Thanks again lilfishie for the link. It helped me not only comfirm my friends betta but one of my own! My other two blue girls are a bit more complicated.. They are a darker blue and it is harder to see their rays. But it seems their back fin is a tad bit longer than the average females that I use to have. Plus they still have fin damage. But I know one of them is a VT as well.

If it's true about haveing a different female and male, how well would it be to have my VT girl (once shes healed up and completely healthy) with sunny, my HM betta?

Vt gene is dominant so you will end up all vt most likely in the first generation. You'd have to breed one of the babies back with the halfnoon to have a chance at any halfmoon fry.
